Virgin of Candelaria

Room 6, Vitrine 64

Oil on canvas
Cusco School
18th century
Private collection

Representation of the Virgin, adorned with earrings, pearls and silk and holding the Christ Child and a burning candle. Some art historians believe that the shape of the Virgin’s gown evokes the Apus, or sacred mountains, of Andean mythology.
