In ancient Peru, as in many other parts of the world, ceremonial scepters were symbols of authority and power.

In the Andean region, they were usually made from precious metals. Wooden scepters or clubs have also been found, and these were covered with thin sheets of silver, gold or gilded copper. This plating technique enabled artisans to create pieces which were lighter but still covered with gold or silver.
